Hayama Akito

Akito in the manga Akito in the anime Name: Hayama Akito (last, first)
Age: 11 (at the start of series)
Birthday: October 12th
Blood Type: B
Hair: Light Brown/Auburn
Eyes: Brown
Family: Father (full name unknown), Hayama Natsumi (sister)

While Sana is a peppy, loud, and energetic optimist, Akito is a withdrawn, cold, and collected pessimist. He rarely speaks, and when he does, he uses as few words as possible. It's hard for him to express his feelings clearly (like Sana said, it would be nice to have someone interpret what he says!), and it's a rare moment when he laughs, even after meeting Sana. At first he seems to be the antihero of the story, but when you lay out all the cards on the table, it's clear that Akito is the one whose character has developed most in Kodocha.

How did Hayama get to be so cold? Well, the main source of the problem is his family - he didn't exactly grow up in a Brady Bunch household, and that affected him more than anything else. After his mother died giving birth to him, his father started engrossing himself in work, and shunned his family completely. His elder sister Natsumi bullied him, blamed Akito for the loss of their mom, and called Akito a devil child constantly. Of course, when you hear it so many times, chances are it'll get to you - Hayama started acting like a devil, causing havoc in the classroom and provoking authority if it gets in his way. Words were no longer exchanged, and Hayama was forced to eat outside. Fortunately, all this ends when Sana lends him a hand; and when the root of his problems is taken out, Hayama starts changing, little by little. He gains the will to live because he now has a reason to, and starts cherishing what he has. Of course, he doesn't turn into a complete angel; Hayama, like the rest of the Kodocha crew, still has his quirks that make him... well, him.

Hayama very rarely lies, and even the teachers he bullied can give him credit for his honesty; even if that same honesty can get a little harsh sometimes. He's a very straightforward person, and doesn't like conversing politely with people he doesn't even know/like. Although Akito was once a troublemaker, he gets excellent grades, and has shown immense talent in karate. He actually dislikes conflicts, and will avoid them if possible. If there's a problem concerning him going on, he makes no effort to smooth it out, and he doesn't talk about it with others either, as Hayama is a rather unsociable person. It's not easy sparking relationship with him, but once you've gained his trust, you've done it all. Akito is a person very devoted and protective of his loved ones; Sana in particular.
