Being the lone wolf around here is my job!
.................... Hayama - Vol 2, Chp 10

Beginning

When we first meet Sana and Akito, you'd think it's a wonder how they got to be friends. Both of them have just begun sixth grade; although no one is exactly learning anything, what with Akito and his goons running amuck in the classroom; they've caused so much catastrophe that they've even reduced the teacher to tears. And to make things worse, the school staff is absolutely helpless to do anything about it! Hayama's got a disturbing picture of two teachers in a rather heaty moment, and he's using it as blackmail material.

Sana, tired of Hayama's antics, decides stands up to him, along with the girls of her class. One of those girls, Mami, calls Hayama a devil child, Sana gives Akito a well-deserved slap which he is particularly sensitive about (as he was called that all his life by his sister Natsumi). He only glares coldly as the boys drown her into a pond after school. Sana comes to her rescue just in time and, after seeing Mami so weak, begins to tremble with anger and slaps Hayama across the face. She confronts him as to why he's doing this, and in reply, he chokes her, and orders her to stay out of his way. Not one to be pushed around, Sana makes up her mind to fight fire with fire, and obtains a picture of a pantless Hayama, and threatens to publish it all across the school. Hayama finally succumbs to her will and puts an end to the classroom chaos.

Kill me. With Hayama's retirement as "classroom bully", he transformed from a boss monkey into a lone wolf. Sana, who felt slightly responsible for turning him into one, resolves to try and help him, and asks him what she can do. Hayama offers her a knife and tells her to kill him. Eyes widening, Sana takes the knife away from him and shouts at him, asking him why he would do such a thing. Hayama, who was expecting this kind of reaction from her, yells back at her in return.

You're really screwed up, you know. You think that your thoughts are the only right ones? That's rude... and annoying as hell. If you want to be bright and cheerful, do it without involving me. Stop putting your nose in things you'll never understand! You don't understand how I feel at all!

Sana stabs the wall behind him, hands shaking. Tears now forming in her eyes, she speaks up and then fleds the scene. A wide-eyed Hayama gazes at her. "What? She's crying... what a weird girl." This was a first for Hayama, who's never had anyone cry for his sake before.

... That's right. I don't understand the way you think at all. But that's why... I want to understand... Really... how could you say that... you want to die?

Sana tries to stay away from him; she tries, yet she can't. A weeping Natsumi realizes her faults Swearing that she won't give up until she makes him give up, her resolve to help him grows stronger. Sana remembers Hayama's problems with his family (which she overhears while spying near his house), and realizing that this was how Hayama became the cold and uncaring person she hated, Sana made them realize how strongly they had affected him through her acting; she had starred in a drama that involved a family that was in a situation just like the Hayamas, and through watching that, their problems came to a stand-still.

After all, why should anyone hate a son whose mother died to protect? The Hayamas were never an evil family; their problem was a misunderstanding that remained unsolved for the longest time. Falling in love Hayama-chichi only neglected his children because the pain of losing his wife was too strong; immersing himself in work was the only way he could think of to distract himself from all the hurt. And even Natsumi, who had bullied Akito all his life, had only done so because she missed her mother so dearly. The Hayama family began to communicate and cherish each other; and after realizing what Sana had done for him, Hayama Akito fell in love with her. Unfortunately, it would take a while for Sana to realize she loved him back.
