.................... Sana - Vol 2, Chp 10

Consolation

Even a seemingly carefree and open person have secrets that can flip their happy mood 180 degrees; Sana is no exception. As we soon learn, Sana had made a promise with her mother Misako - and she tells Sana that it is time the promise be fulfilled. Whatever the promise is, we don't know yet, but the solemn, even sorrowful expression on Sana's face that reacted to Misako's words tells us it's not something that pleases her.

The next day, Class 3 goes on another school trip; this time it's camping - Quietly observingand its duration being three days and two nights, Sana, Hayama, and their classmates get a few days off from their lives at home. Sana makes an effort to make this trip a happy one, but the talk with her mother bugs her more than she'd like, which leaves her with a few quiet thoughts of stress and worry. Hayama, who seems to be the only one that notices this, quietly observes her from afar.

The first night goes by without any sleep for Sana; and ironically, Akito and Tsuyoshi, Part~y!who chose to spend their night playing video games, watch her from a window. Remembering Sana's melancholy expression earlier, Hayama decides to confront her about it. As he begins speaking, however, he gets interrupted with the loud, drunken laughing of Principal Narunaru. After a party and karaoke with the teachers (plus free sushi for Hayama!), Sana's mood lifts, and the final day comes in what seems a blink of an eye.

Of course, with home so near, Sana's anxiety quickly returns to her, Oof!and the second night wasn't didn't grant her any sleep, either. Still a little dazed, she makes her way into the woods as she follows a firefly (yes, a firefly) carelessly.. ...And Sana being Sana, falls off a cliff while she's at it. Hayama, who was watching her, stares as Sana's figure suddenly disappears from his sight; and after shaking away the creeping conclusion that Sana was an alien, he jumps in after her.

Sure enough, there was Sana. Will I be raped?!With no way out except up, and both of them not being very able climbers, the two were stuck together, like it or not. Sana, remembering the kiss stolen from her, gets rather scared of being alone with Akito ("Could I be raped?!"). She warns Hayama to stay away from her. A smirking Akito calmly tells her she's got nothing to worry about. Sana, in reply, just inches away from him. A moment of silence follows, and Akito finally speaks up.

"The thing I told you last night.. before the party..."
"Ah! What was it?"
"Sometimes... I think... you're good at acting, right? So, sometimes I think... that all your happiness and energy is just... an act."

...Bingo. An act uncoveredSana laughs weakly and tells him if she doesn't act all bright and happy, people say she doesn't seem like herself. And so she acts like "herself"; a 24-hour show that goes on for 365 days every year. And Hayama Akito, out of all people, saw through her greatest sham. He asks her if she's worried about something, and Sana's smile fades almost instantly. "You could tell?" "Yeah." A bit shaken, Sana begins to tell him about her family problems. Without realizing it, however, tears started to fall from her eyes.

Why was Hayama the only one who knew? [...] I'm just nervous... it's the first time... I've been told that I'm worried...

She tells Hayama that Misako is writing an essay about her. Hayama tries to word his feelings "When that essay gets published... all my happy days with Mama... might come to an end." Hayama, although not fully understanding the situation, tells her that kids hated by their mothers don't grow up to be good like Sana. "I don't know why your happy days might come to an end... but I'm sure they'd come back again." He goes on to thank Sana for what she did for his family.

I'm amazed that you can say, "I didn't really do anything. If I did one good thing, I'd brag about it for the rest of my life. You really are.. ...pretty amazing. And... I'm really grateful... for what you've done.

And so.. um.. when you're feeling down... I... want to help you. And so, well... if there's ever a time you feel like crying... come over to my house.

Sana realizes that Hayama truly is opening up to her; he had never talked to her about his feelings like he was now. And although there was a lot of muttering... Hayama Akito was trying to tell her he cared. Sana, of course, 'I'm really glad that Hayama said that.' couldn't help but laugh at his attempt at kindness; but she thanked him as well, smiling from the bottom of her heart. And it was at her smile that the inpenetrable Hayama Akito produced his first real and sincere smile (not including smirks ;)!). She tells him how cute he looks, and he blushes. Sana laughs at his embarassed expression too, and she tells him to smile one more time. Akito, probably so embarassed that his cheeks turned redder than #ff0000, runs away from her. Of course, Sana follows, and before you know it, they found themselves atop the cliff. Oh, the wonders of shoujo manga~

I know it might sound kind of weird, but I feel a little better... Knowing that there's somewhere I can go if I feel bad... I'm alright now. I can go home to Mama who's waiting for me.
